Profit/loss, net value and exchange gains/losses of the insurance industry in January 2021

The pre-tax profit of insurance enterprises at the end of January 2021 was NT$63.4 billion; the pre-tax profit of life insurance enterprises was NT$61.3 billion, an increase of NT$38 billion, or 163.1%, compared with the same period in 2020; the pre-tax profit of non-life insurance enterprises was NT$2.1 billion, up by NT$0.5 billion or 31.3% compared with the same period in 2020.

 Owners' equity of insurance enterprises at the end of January 2021 was NT$2,584.6 billion; owners' equity of life insurance enterprises was NT$2,440.3 billion, an increase of NT$453.6 billion, or 22.8%, compared with the same period in 2020; the pre-tax profit of non-life insurance enterprises was NT$144.3 billion, up by NT$8.9 billion or 6.6% compared with the same period in 2020.
 
As of the end of
January 2021, the NT Dollar had appreciated by 0.3% versus the US Dollar from the end of 2020, and the cumulative balance of foreign exchange valuation reserve of life insurance enterprises was NT$37.9 billion, down by NT$8.3 billion from the end of 2020. Meanwhile, the combined impact of exchange gains/losses, hedging gains/losses and the net effect of volatility on the foreign exchange valuation reserve of life insurance enterprises was negative NT$27.6 billion. Over the same period, the overseas investments of life insurers resulted in net gains (including exchange gains/losses and hedging gains/losses, but not including the net effect of volatility on the foreign exchange valuation reserve) of NT$699 billion.
