A magnitude 6.0 earthquake with its epicenter off the coast of Yilan hit on August 8, 2019. The FSC has instructed the Residential Earthquake Insurance Fund to activate the emergency response mechanism and reminds people with earthquake insurance that if their building has incurred damage, they can notify their insurer to come make an inspection. The FSC also advises homeowners to purchase earthquake insurance so they can have basic protection.
